Developmental-Behavioral Evaluation Q & A

What is a developmental-behavioral evaluation?

During a developmental-behavioral pediatric evaluation, Dr. Griffieth and his team ask a series of questions and administer tests to evaluate your child’s growth, development, and behavior patterns. Doing so helps identify possible conditions requiring treatment, such as:

  • Autism disorders
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Attention deficit disorder (ADD)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Learning disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Obsessive/compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Developmental delays

If your child struggles with developmental or behavioral health issues, see Dr. Griffieth and his team as soon as possible for an evaluation. The team can complete developmental-behavioral evaluations during your child’s annual exam.

What happens during a developmental-behavioral evaluation?

When your child arrives at Cornerstone Pediatrics, PLLC, for a developmental-behavioral pediatric evaluation, Dr. Griffieth and his team complete an initial intake to screen for developmental issues. They check your child’s weight, height, growth patterns, and vital signs.

Dr. Griffieth obtains information regarding the way your child functions at home, school, or in other environments. He uses several behavioral rating scales in a questionnaire format, followed by diagnostic testing and other assessments. He can refer out for additional testing and treatment if needed.

If your child undergoes follow-up testing, Dr. Griffieth can discuss the results one to two weeks later. He can write a letter to your child’s school or other agency to inform them of their diagnosis and recommendations.

What if my child struggles with developmental or behavioral issues?

If your child has a developmental or behavioral issue requiring treatment, Dr. Griffieth and his team might recommend:

Lifestyle changes

Sometimes making lifestyle changes can help your child better thrive at home or at school. Examples include setting a regular routine, getting plenty of sleep and exercise, and eating healthy foods.

Medical and medication management

If your child has a medical condition or takes medication, Dr. Griffieth and his team can properly manage their condition and make medication adjustments as needed.

Specialist referrals

Dr. Griffieth might recommend your child see a specialist for mental health counseling, physical therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral or social skills training, or other treatments as needed.
